"THE GIN GAME"
The Gin Game,
winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for drama, is that rare theatrical combination of hilarity and heartbreak belonging to people we are sure live just down the street, or maybe in our own home.  Fonsia Dorsey and Weller Martin, who share the experience of loneliness in their later years, meet on the back porch of an old folk’s home and build a friendship while occupying their time playing Gin.  At first glance this might not seem like much of a premise for an exciting night of theater, but there is a reason for that Pulitzer Prize.  While possessing a certain charm, our characters are never sentimental portraits, but hard edged realistic human beings who have lived their share of mistakes.  Weller’s colorful and often irreverent use of the ruder elements of the English language sets up a growing tension in disharmony with Fonsia’s strict religious upbringing. Coburn deftly and with wonderful humor lays the ground work for a second act climax that leaves the audience just a bit breathless.

The Players –Sharon Collar and Fred Bornhoeft have a sixteen year history of entertaining audiences as Fonsia and Weller, always to rave reviews. Sharon’s talents as a professional character actor  in motion pictures, national television and local professional stages.  Her melodious voice has even been found on video games. Sharon was last seen as Emma Cristano in Over the River and Through the Woods at Sun City Grand.  Fred’s extensive range as an actor has earned him such diverse and difficult roles as Henry Higgins and Alfred P Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mocking Bird and Sir in The Dresser.  Not resting on previous laurels, Fred and Sharon have garnered five ariZoni acting awards between them.  Sharon points out that three of them are hers, but Fred quickly counters that he received both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in the same season.
